LA and Vegas are both large and populated cities, so traffic conditions can affect the drive time on either end. However in general you should allow about 5 hours for this trip without stops.
There's arguments for and against driving. It's more environmentally friendly, you get to see some sites, and with MirrorTrip - the cost of a one-way car rental is cheaper than flying, especially if there's more than one person in your travelling party. By time you travel to the airport on each end, check in, and wait for your flight - it will probably take the same amount of time also.
On the otherhand, LA trafic is famously notorious, and depending on what your looking for, the roadside attractions along the way can be a little kitchy (sparing Mojave National Reserve - which definately isn't kitchy).
