Whilst the condition of roads in Texas can vary significantly, the general condition of the main highways between Houston and Dallas is quite good. Weather is another factor to consider, for up to the minute weather conditions - it's best to check directly from DriveTexas.
Dallas's weather is a little cooler than Houston's. The summer in both cities though can be quite formidable if you're not used to heat. The temperature often exceeds 90 °F during the summer peak in July and August. Otherwise you might be better suited visiting during spring, either in March or April. This is also a good time to drive around outside the city to catch a glimpse of the renown bluebonnets.
Dallas and Houston are both large and populated cities, so traffic conditions can affect the drive time on either end. However in general you should allow about 4 hours for this trip.
